Mary Susan Hughes
Obituary
An angel on earth, and now an angel above. Mary Susan Hughes of Papillion, Nebraska surrendered to cancer the morning of November 2, 2021 after 20 months since her initial diagnosis. Born Mary Susan Hall April 24, 1947, in Lincoln, Nebraska to Leo Warren Hall and Ruth Mae (Brown) Hall she came to be a registered nurse for 44-years with tremendous compassion for the patients she serviced.
Mary graduated from Lincoln High School in 1965 and University of Nebraska School of Nursing in 1969. Initially her career included a short time at UNMC (2-yrs); Lincoln Veteran’s Hospital in Lincoln (7-yrs.); Lincoln Family Clinic (4-yrs.); St. Mary’s Hospital, Lubbock, Texas (2-yrs.); and finally 29-years for the University of Nebraska Medical Center in one of their family practice clinics.
Rowland Wyman Hughes was fortunate to wed Mary on May 14, 1979 and they enjoyed 43 wonderful years together. She is survived by Rowland; son Andrew Rowland Hughes and his wife Liliana who have two daughters Isabella and Kennedy of Bennington, Nebraska; and daughters — from Rowland’s former marriage — Jennifer Kaye Schmidt (Trevor) and their sons Devon and Johnathan of Omaha; and Denise Lynn Duran of Largo, Florida. Additionally there are a number of nephews and nieces. Mary was preceded in death by her parents (Leo and Ruth) and her two siblings, sisters Carol Ann Gleason of Detroit, Michigan and Janet Mae Hayes from Copperas, Texas.
Mary’s passion was her family. After that everything was fair game. Although nursing and assisting patients was very important. Friends had to be in the top five joys as she accumulated so many. Rarely, if ever did Mary say a contrary word on any subject or toward any person.
She was just an outstanding and loving person — period.
